Rug Blocking
Rug Blocking
Rug blocking is a type of rug repair. “Blocking” is a general term used to describe numerous methods of putting a rug under tension to return it to its original shape. Often sizing is applied to the back to help the rug retain the shape.
Rugs become misshapen for a few reasons, usually as a result of the manner in which they were made. This Afghan Turkoman runner illustrates two common issues that can be cured – or partially cured - by blocking a rug.

Tribal or village hand knotted rugs woven on a wool foundation will often buckle, curl and become misshapen over time.
The pronounced buckle in this rug, seen in the upper right hand corner of the photo, made the rug a hazard.
Rug blocking and sizing made this runner a usable rug.
