Replacing fringe on oriental rugs
The fringe of a handmade oriental rug is the end of the warps, the foundation yarns that run the length of the rug. The fringe normally wears out far more quickly than the body of the rug. When that happens, the end has to be secured to prevent the pile yarns from falling out the end of the rug. The photo on the right shows the back of a rug before we repaired it, and illustrates the problem.
On some rugs, rug fringe replacement can be included as part of a rug fringe repair. If you like the look of fringes we can than replace the decorative portion of the fringe with a new, manufactured fringe.
The owner of this rug took preventative action before the pile loss became severe. In the photo on the left you can see the fringe is worn to the point at which the end structure will soon be compromised and the rug pile will be lost. We stabilized the end of this rug with an internal stitch, then hand stitched the new fringe in place securing it into the foundation.
