Rug Washing
“How do you clean rugs?” is often the first question we hear when rug owners call to ask about having their oriental rugs and area rugs cleaned. So I made this rug cleaning video to demonstrate the process.
Professional rug cleaners wash rugs to get them clean. Oriental rugs and most fine area rugs are woven from wool, silk and cotton yarns. The natural fibers that make up these yarns are absorbent; spills, accidents and soil go inside the fibers. The pile yarns of the rug are secured in a foundation of woven yarns, similar to string, that form a multi-level, complex structure. So cleaning the surface of the rug doesn’t remove the contamination that’s inside the fibers of the soil trapped in the foundation of the rug.
Rug washing removes the soil that’s inside the fibers, yarns and rug foundation.

This rug cleaning video demonstrates many of the steps we use to wash rugs. I followed a rug through the cleaning process using photos and video clips taken with my smart phone here in the rug cleaning plant in Lebanon, NH.
The video is 5 1/2 minutes. The entire process, for an average rug, takes hours.
